An Idea Takes Shape
Immunotec's journey began in the United States, where Dr. Gustavo Bounous began examining recovery in post-surgical patients. He continued this research in Canada to discover which nutritional elements might affect healing and recovery. A protein emerged as the most likely candidate.

Research Begins
At McGill University, Dr. Bounous met Dr. Patricia Kongshavn, an emerging PhD researcher playing a pioneering role in the new field of clinical immunology. Together they published their first joint paper, “The Effect of Dietary Amino Acids on Immune Reactivity,” beginning their search for a protein that could improve immune function.

A Breakthrough
Although the early trials did not produce revolutionary results, a protein extract was mailed to Dr. Bounous in the early 1980s for further study. When tested in animals, the extract showed notable results, including a 30% to 50% increase in life span.

Great Minds Think Alike
During this period, Dr. Bounous learned of Dr. Wulf Droge's research, the first to describe glutathione's effect on the immune response of a living organism. Dr. Bounous realized his protein might affect glutathione levels. In 2005, Dr. Droge joined Immunotec as Senior Vice President of Research and Development.

With a strong medical foundation and a growing understanding of the protein's potential impact on glutathione and immune health, Dr. Bounous and Dr. Kongshavn launched Immunotec Research Corp with Dieter Beer to advance their research.

The Montreal General Hospital team, working with McGill researchers, examined the protein's effects in patients with advanced HIV/AIDS following a rigorous review process. Dr. Bounous's team documented weight gain and increased glutathione levels. Although it was a small trial, it helped secure funding for further research.

A Product Goes Public
Following this success, Immunotec officially launched in Canada in 1996 and in the United States in 1997.
